Clint Dempsey, Fulham's American midfielder, has refused to suit up for the opening weekend of play. He is coming off of the greatest season ever by an American in a European league. However, he has been very clear about his intentions to play for a team that will compete for the Premiership and play in the Champions League.
Ordinarily, I take the side of management and go against the player when situations like this arise. However, I'm backing Dempsey on this one. He has been with Fulham for four seasons, and he consistently gave them his best effort. He scored several clutch goals, including one that prevented them from being relegated several years ago. Due to his performance last season, he deserved the right to play with a better side. In addition, he is 29 years old and at the peak of his career. If he doesn't go to a better club now, then he never will.
I'm rooting for Liverpool or perhaps Arsenal to sign him. Arsenal just received 23 million pounds for Robin van Persie so hopefully they'll put some of that money towards Dempsey. It will be an interesting saga that unfolds.
